Distribution of a payment

Where does the money of a payment go?

When a payment is captured, its amount is divided into shares by a plan set in advance: what the unit receives, the bank’s fee and, in a marketplace, each seller’s part. The shares always add up to the captured amount.

2.1

When the banks settle to the company

In a retail group whose banks settle to it directly, the platform holds no money. A captured card payment has two shares: the unit’s net and the acquiring fee under the agreement. The bank keeps its fee when it settles and credits the net; the platform records what is owed so that reconciliation can check it.

The ledger reads it as one balanced entry: the acquirer owes the captured amount; of it, the net is due to the unit and the fee is the acquirer’s. When the report and the credit arrive, the entry is closed, or the difference stays visible.

One order, two payments

One order can be paid by several instruments: part with bonus points, the rest by card. Each part is a payment with its own distribution; the order is paid when together they cover the picked amount.

2.3

In a marketplace

Where a payment service provider that holds its merchants’ money runs on the platform, the same division has more shares: each seller’s part, the marketplace’s commission, the provider’s fee, a share for a good cause and a reserve.

The plan comes from the policies of the unit that sells: a template — direct sale, marketplace, agency or franchise — the commission, the share for a good cause, how long shares are held and how much is kept as a rolling reserve.

2.4

The rules of the division

  • Every share is counted in whole kopiykas and rounded down; exactly one share takes the remainder, so the shares always add up to the captured amount.
  • A partial capture, after picking for instance, scales the plan to the captured amount.
  • A fee is a share like any other: always visible to the unit, and to the payer before paying where the unit chooses.
  • A rolling reserve, where a provider holds money, is its own share; a group whose banks settle directly has none.

2.5

When money goes back

A refund or a lost dispute is taken back, in proportion, from the shares that received the money. In the demo the fees are not returned: the bank keeps its fee, and in a marketplace the provider keeps its own. Where the banks settle directly, a refund is netted by the bank in a later batch, and reconciliation checks that it was netted once and in full.
